Many mahalos to the 33 participants of the January 14th Hawai’i Wildlife Fund (HWF) cleanup along the Ka‘ū coastline. Please see attachment for a photo of half our enthusiastic beach cleaners =) In short, we scoured about a mile of coastline from Kai‘ole Bay to Kamilo Point and removed about 2,233 lbs. of marine debris.

Thanks to the meticulous datasheet entry by Cat, Tony, Judy, Isaiah, Ken, Cindy and two anonymous volunteers, we have a better idea of the composition of the rubbish that was removed (see detailed stats below). Overall, we estimate that over 46,100 pieces of trash were removed – 97.3% were plastics, 1.2% were rubber, and less than 1% were metal, cloth, wood or other materials. Like always, all HI-5’s were recycled, and any derelict fishing nets collected were brought to the transfer station at Wai‘ōhinu for later inclusion in the Nets-to-Energy program.

If you are interested in joining HWF for a future cleanup event, please mark your calendars for the upcoming dates. Further cleanup details will be shared as the dates approach.

1. March 10th – HWF Ka‘ū community beach cleanup event (location TBA) – 4wd necessary, so please RSVP if you’ll need a ride or have any space in your vehicle, mahalo.

2. May 19th– HWF & NARS (Natural Area Reserve) collaborative shoreline cleanup of Manukā NAR. Details to follow but RSVPs needed for this one so let me know if you’ll be coming as space is limited.

3. June (date?) – HWF & Surfrider Hilo’s International Surfing Day beach cleanup event. Location and date to be decided.

4. Sept (date?) – HWF Ka‘ū community beach cleanup event (location TBA) – 4wd necessary, so please RSVP if you’ll need a ride or have any space in your vehicle, mahalo.

For your information, our next community beach cleanup event in Ka’u is taking place next Saturday, Jan 14th, 2012 (see attached for event flier). In all likelihood, the beach cleanup site will be Kamilo Point and the surrounding coastline. If you are interested in joining us, volunteers are asked to meet at Wai‘ōhinu Park (mm 65) at 7:45am. You’ll need to bring sturdy footwear and sun/wind protection, a bag lunch, and a re-fillable beverage container. HWF will provide gloves, bags, and a composting lua.

We will be leaving at 8am sharp so please don’t be late. 4wd vehicles are required to access the cleanup site, but there is still some space available if you need a ride (but RSVPs are a must as space is limited!). We expect to be finished by 2pm and back to park around 3pm. Please send any questions or RSVPs to Megan at 769-7629 or reply to this email (kahakai.cleanups).

This is a friendly REMINDER that HWF is hosting an anchialine pond restoration workday this Saturday, Dec 10th from 8am – 1pm (meeting at Wai‘ōhinu Park @ 7:45pm). Come help us remove the last of the invasive Christmasberry from around this fragile coastal ecosystem. Volunteers are asked to please wear a longsleeve shirt, and to bring gardening gloves (if you like, or can borrow), sun/wind protection, sturdy footwear, bag lunch & a re-usable water bottle. Also, bring a swimsuit for pau hana at Kamilo if you are so inclined. November 12th, 2011: Cleanup from Kamilo Point – Kalolo
Coastline cleaned ~ 0.5 mi
Participants: 66
Trashbags removed: 107 (72 XL black trashbags, 27 burlap bags, 8 re-used Dacalio coffee bags)
Items removed: 73,218 pieces (98.8% plastics, 1% cloth, <1% metal, wood, rubber, glass, according to the following datasheet calculations)
Non-nets removed: 2,974.3 lbs.
Derelict fishing nets removed: ~1,000 lbs.
Volume removed: 1,028 cu. ft. (in seven pickups)

TOTAL MARINE DEBRIS HAULED OFF COASTLINE: 3,974.3 lbs (~ 2 US tons)

If you cannot be there in person, submit your written testimony to the Council email (counciltestimony) or fax (808/961-8912) by Mon., Nov 14th @ noon! An example letter is provided below care of Dr. Hank Carson:

"I am writing to voice my support for Bill 17, Draft 2: Plastic Bag Reduction. As a
resident of the island, I am alarmed at the number of “disposable” plastic bags I see on island streets, beaches and waters. I know that these bags kill and injure wildlife, including endangered and protected species, and easily disintegrate into persistent fragments that have potentially grave consequences for human health and the environment. Existing litter laws are not
preventing these impacts; more needs to be done. The convenience of plastic bags, used on
average for a few minutes, is not worth the risk to our island’s health for decades to come. I urge you to vote “yes” on this bill."
