Aloha mai kākou,

Many mahalos to the 33 participants of the January 14th Hawai’i Wildlife Fund (HWF) cleanup along the Ka‘ū coastline. Please see attachment for a photo of half our enthusiastic beach cleaners =) In short, we scoured about a mile of coastline from Kai‘ole Bay to Kamilo Point and removed about 2,233 lbs. of marine debris.

Thanks to the meticulous datasheet entry by Cat, Tony, Judy, Isaiah, Ken, Cindy and two anonymous volunteers, we have a better idea of the composition of the rubbish that was removed (see detailed stats below). Overall, we estimate that over 46,100 pieces of trash were removed – 97.3% were plastics, 1.2% were rubber, and less than 1% were metal, cloth, wood or other materials. Like always, all HI-5’s were recycled, and any derelict fishing nets collected were brought to the transfer station at Wai‘ōhinu for later inclusion in the Nets-to-Energy program.

If you are interested in joining HWF for a future cleanup event, please mark your calendars for the upcoming dates. Further cleanup details will be shared as the dates approach.

1. March 10th – HWF Ka‘ū community beach cleanup event (location TBA) – 4wd necessary, so please RSVP if you’ll need a ride or have any space in your vehicle, mahalo.

2. May 19th– HWF & NARS (Natural Area Reserve) collaborative shoreline cleanup of Manukā NAR. Details to follow but RSVPs needed for this one so let me know if you’ll be coming as space is limited.

3. June (date?) – HWF & Surfrider Hilo’s International Surfing Day beach cleanup event. Location and date to be decided.

4. Sept (date?) – HWF Ka‘ū community beach cleanup event (location TBA) – 4wd necessary, so please RSVP if you’ll need a ride or have any space in your vehicle, mahalo.

Likewise, HWF will also be tabling at the Ocean Day – Mālama Kanaloa Event on Sat, Feb 18th in Keaukaha (near Hilo). To stay posted about all our upcoming events throughout Hawai‘i nei please “join” our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/hawaiiwildlifefund.

Aloha HWF ‘ohana,

This is a friendly reminder that our Kai’ole Bay to Kamilo Point – Ka’u Community Cleanup event is happening this Sat., Nov 12th from 7:45am to ~3pm. FYI there is NO SPACE AVAIL in our HWF 4wd vehicles. If you have already RSVPed, thanks and I’ve saved a spot for you. If not, please arrive at Wai’ohinu Park with your own 4wd vehicles – mahalo. Please see cleanup details in forward below.

FYI – The Subaru Hawai’i Share the Love campaign is still up and running strong…. Please remember to vote for Hawai’i Wildlife Fund on Facebook poll: http://www.facebook.com/SubaruHI#!/SubaruHI?sk=app_126231547426086

Last but not least, the last public comment period for the Plastic Bag Reduction Bill (Bill 17, draft 2) is happening in Kona on Tues., Nov 15th. Please See attachment for more details. If you cannot be there in person, submit your written testimony to the Council email (counciltestimony) or fax (808/961-8912) by Mon., Nov 14th @ noon! An example letter is provided below care of Dr. Hank Carson:

"I am writing to voice my support for Bill 17, Draft 2: Plastic Bag Reduction. As a
resident of the island, I am alarmed at the number of “disposable” plastic bags I see on island streets, beaches and waters. I know that these bags kill and injure wildlife, including endangered and protected species, and easily disintegrate into persistent fragments that have potentially grave consequences for human health and the environment. Existing litter laws are not
preventing these impacts; more needs to be done. The convenience of plastic bags, used on
average for a few minutes, is not worth the risk to our island’s health for decades to come. I urge you to vote “yes” on this bill."

Mahalo a nui loa,
Megan

Upcoming HWF cleanup events:

1) SAT., October 1st @ 9am: HWF & Surfrider Hilo Chapter present a RAPtoberfest cleanup of the Hilo breakwall and Radio Bay. RAPtoberfest is a new Surfrider cleanup that promotes their Rise Against Plastics campaign. Volunteers are asked to meet in Keaukaha between the Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) fence and the Port of Hilo. Look for HWf & Surfrider banners advertising cleanup, a dirt road, and possibly a Waipi’o poi salesman This is a BYOB (bring your own buckets) event …. we’ll be relying solely on buckets and burlap bags (no single-use plastic trashbags) to clean up this particularly dirty stretch of coast so bring your own if can. Also, please bring a refillable water bottle, and if you like, a potluck item to share for lunch (or else at least a bag lunch for yourself). This access point is accessible by 2wd vehicles but please try to carpool or ride a bike if possible. New Surfrider Hilo t-shirts will be available for sale for $15 (members get a discount) at the event but first come first serve as numbers are limited. See attached flier for distribution!

2) SAT., November 12th @ 7:45am: HWF Ka’ū
Coastal Cleanup event (location to be determined between Ka Lae and Kamilo Point). We have limited space available (only 19 seats!) in OUR 4wd vehicles for this event so please RSVP as soon as possible if you need a ride to the cleanup site from Wai’ohinu Park that morning. If you are interested in bringing a school group to this event, please contact me ASAP to coordinate details. 4wd vehicles are needed! If you are planning to come and extra spots avail for other volunteers please also let me know. Volunteers are asked to bring a bag lunch, a reusable water bottle (HWF will provide 5-gal jugs to refill yours), ample sun/wind protection, and sturdy footwear.

3) SAT., January 14th, 2012 @ 7:45am: HWF Ka’ū Coastal Cleanup event (location to be determined between Ka Lae and Kamilo Point). We have limited space available (23 spots) in OUR 4wd vehicles for this event so please RSVP as soon as possible if you need a ride to the cleanup site from Wai’ohinu Park that morning. Other details are the same as 11/12 cleanup.

4) More dates to follow in 2012 (March, May, June, Sept, Nov …. etc.) to be determined.

Other HWF Happenings:

1) September is "Give Aloha" month. Any donations made to Hawai’i Wildlife Fund (we are a tax-exempt 501(c)3 non-profit organization) at your local Foodland or Sack N Save location will be matched by their company! Make your $1 donation count as $2. For more info, see the Foodland website @ http://givealoha.foodland.com/start.php. For more info about HWF’s conservation mission and active projects in Hawai’i nei see our website @ www.wildhawaii.org. Mahalo a nui loa!

2) We are also coordinating anchialine pond restoration work at Ho’onoua (also in the Wai’ohinu coastal portion of the State Forest Reserve). If you are interested in helping us to remove Christmasberry & Sourbush (invasive species lining the ponds) or sediment from the actual ponds please RSVP for the following cleanup dates as space is limited in our vehicles. Mahalo.

Nov 8th, 2011 (same meeting time/details as cleanup events – wear longsleeve shirt if possible)
